Mr. Matthias Schmid

Seaweed Biology Researcher

Main Research Interests

  • Effects of abiotic factors on bioactive compound composition in marine algae
  • Extraction and quantification of bioactives in seaweeds
  • Optimised cultivation of marine macroalgae

Short Biography

Matthias holds a Diploma in Biology of the University of Rostock (Germany). After graduating he was involved in different research projects in marine biology before moving to Ireland to focus on research in seaweed biology at NUI Galway. In 2011 he started a PhD under the supervision of Dr. Dagmar Stengel as part of NutraMara. His research topic focuses on the effects on extrinsic factors on the variation of key bioactive compounds in marine macroalgae of commercial interest. Over the next three years he will determine the seasonal and spatial variability of bioactives in seaweeds in their natural habitat. As a second step lab cultures will be established to ascertain the factors that control compounds of interest and to achieve maximum levels of bioactive compounds in seaweeds as a source for functional foods.
