NutraMara Researcher wins poster award at Kiel Food Science Symposium

Dr. Sinéad Lordan of Teagasc Food Research Centre, Moorepark, was recently awarded for her poster presentation at the 2nd Kiel Food Science Symposium held in May 2012.  The two-day event was hosted by the Max Rubner-Institut, the Federal Research Institute of Nutrition and Food, in Kiel, Germany and was attended by researchers from throughout Europe.  The symposium involved keynote lectures by invited speakers as well as oral and poster presentations focusing on various aspects of current scientific research on functional food and food safety.  Sinéad’s presentation, entitled “In vitro evaluation of Irish seaweed extracts as inhibitors of key enzymes linked to type 2 diabetes”, is part of her ongoing research within NutraMara which involves investigations into the anti-diabetic properties of seaweed extracts.  Specifically, Sinéad’s presentation reported on the potent inhibitory effects of seaweed extracts on carbohydrate-hydrolysing enzymes.
